Tokyo Drift Impresses With Trial

By Jeff Collerson
Tokyo Drift, once considered a "boom" sprinter, has not raced since July but the son of top producer Megalodon recorded a slick trial at Wentworth Park on Friday night, indicating he is set to pick up where he left off.

The Lynne Aldous-owned and trained dog went over 280m in a clearance trial and clocked a flying 16.01 with a brilliant first split of 5.30.

Crack short courser Speeding FINE took 16.30 to topple prolific Wentworth Park winner Okey in the final event on Friday, an indication of how well Tokyo Drift performed.

Aldous' dog has a great record with 11 wins and four seconds from 18 starts, including a 26.24 effort over 472m at Bulli.

King Calymea "tricked" Wentworth Park trial clockers when he led throughout to land a substantial betting plunge on debut at headquarters on Friday.

Trained by Donnaleah Carter, King Calymea, having only his third start, railed underneath favourite GLYCERINE going into the first turn and hung on tenaciously to win by just over a length in 30.09.

After the race Carter explained: "His only look at Wenty had been four months ago when he went awful, clocking a very slow 30.70 for the 520m.

"But what the clockers wouldn't have known was that there was a car accident on the way to Sydney that night, it was around 40 degrees, and it took us five hours to get to Wentworth Park.

"After all that King Calymea could hardly have been expected to run fast time but he has been trialing well at home and while I don't bet I suppose that's why he was well supported tonight.''

Carter, who has been training for 18 years, races mainly on her local Dapto and Nowra tracks but can be expected to become a Wentworth Park regular as the promising King Calymea is just 25 months old.

Veteran Appin breeders Mary and Vince Spiteri have a hot prospect in Friday's impressive Wentworth Park winner Another Choice, a son of their 14-race winner Bella Can Do.

The Spiteris have entrusted Another Choice, who went into Friday's race with five wins from nine provincial starts, to trainer Michelle Sultana.

On Friday the dog went within a tick of the best time of the night with a sizzling 29.67 performance after blistering early splits of 5.37 and 13.70.

Sultana's partner Darryl Thomas said: "We broke Bella Can Do's litter in for Mary and Vince but Another Choice was very headstrong and looked like he would be too much of a handful for them.

"So they asked Michelle to train him and the dog was an instant flying machine.

"He always had phenomenal early pace but early on we were concerned he was only ever going to be a short course dog.

"But he has stepped up from 320m to 388m then 401m before winning over 520m on Friday.''
