Bob Payne Sprint (G3)

Magri Claims Another Wenty Feature

Zipping Megatron made full use of box one to break Good Odds Harada's 2019 race record in taking out Saturday night's group 3 Beast Unleashed Bob Payne Sprint at Wentworth Park.

The Jason Magri-trained youngster took his Wentworth Park tally to eight wins from a dozen starts when he drove along the rails at the first turn, shouldering narrow leader Overflow Beau out of his way, before taking off to score by nearly eight lengths.

One Hot Bandit, trained by Jodie Lord, flashed home to get second, a half-length ahead of Overflow Beau, who had led throughout to defeat Zipping Megatron in the fastest 29.35 heat.

On Saturday Zipping Megatron covered the 520m in 29.55, running home in an outstanding 11.54, and snipping .03sec off the race record set by Good Odds Harada in 2019.

Jodie Lord atoned for her loss in the Bob Payne by landing Saturday night's other group 3 feature, the Evans & Son Jewellers Ladies Bracelet, with Midnight Spritz.

My Hepburn made the pace to the back straight but Midnight Spritz, who was stalking her to that point, dashed to the on the home turn and won by just on three lengths.

Midnight Spritz clocked a smart 29.59, .05sec outside the joint race records of 29.44 shared by 2014 winner Zipping Willow and 2021 victor Pay Call.

Midnight Spritz is owned by young trainer Bailey Dickinson, whose father Stuart is a long-time client of Jodie Lord and her husband Andy.

"Andy phoned me in early 2023 and asked me if I wanted to buy a 14 month old pup,'' Dickinson said.

"I agreed and that pup is Midnight Spritz.''

Midnight Spritz has now won nine of 16 Wentworth Park appearances and her success on Saturday night gave the Lord kennel their second consecutive Bracelet win, as they landed the 2023 final with the great She's A Pearl in 29.72.

Biggest on course tip on Saturday night was the Vic Ellul-trained former Queenslander Radical Tom in a 720m fifth grade and the dog won like a future top class stayer.

After winning just three of 27 Queensland starts, Radical Tom joined Ellul's western Sydney kennels last month and after finishing third over 618m at Richmond at his first start for his new trainer he tackled Saturday's longer race.

Radical Tom was heavily backed into odds-on favouritsm and despite being badly hampered trying to cross to the rails for much of the race, stormed home to win by three lengths in a handy 42.23.

After the race Ellul said: "I trialled him over 720m at Wentworth Park last week and Radical Tom clocked 41.76, which is pretty quick for a fifth grader, and he recorded 16.11 for the first 280m, time good enough to win a decent sprint.

"When he trialled so fast I expected his Queensland owner Jodi Davis to get an offer for the dog and was worried I might lose him.

"Jodi phoned the next day to confirm she had indeed received a good offer but assured me she intended to keep racing Radical Tom and leaving him with me.''

Trunkey Chief was Saturday night's other impressive 520m winner, leading throughout to land a fifth grade in 29.60 for Anthony Odden.

Crack trainer Minnie Finn landed a winning treble on Saturday with Gets Late Early and Great Flash, with each of her greyhounds toppling long odds-on favourites to score, while she also saluted with Both Bowers Ace.
